One of the funniest arguments I've heard against polygamy was while reading a theology book. The well known author, may he rest in peace, wrote that since there were no cases of ordinary men having many wives in the Bible that it was not a common type of marriage. The fact is, there are no cases of monogamous ordinary men in the Bible either. All the men in the Bible are either famous, infamous, or at least blessed to have even been mentioned in the pages of the Bible. How could any man who is mentioned in the Bible ever be considered ordinary again. Furthermore, there is one and only one man in the entire Bible who we know for a fact had one and only one wife and that is Uriah. In metaphor Nathan describes him. "The poor man had nothing save one littel ewe lamb!" And that's Nathan the prophet's words in 2 Samuel 12:3, not mine. Substitute the word wife and you have the literal meaning for the metaphor. "The poor man had nothing, save one wife." I'll leave you to garner what you may from that verse. Furthermore, many polygamists of the Bible are not known to us as polygamists because their additional wives were not mentioned by name. In Judges 12:9 we find Ibzan who had thirty sons. Not even one wife is mentioned for Ibzan. Are we to believe that he had thirty sons by some sort of immaculate conception, where even a wife was not necessary, simply because his wife is not mentioned? If you have any other funny arguments against polygamy I'd love to hear them. It should be easy for you to come up with lots of them. I'd like to put together a joke book some day that includes them all because they're all based on prejudice and emotion without any whit of logic. Which reminds me of the silliest of all arguments against polygamy. It goes like this: "Since the Lord made only one wife for Adam then we are to have only one wife." Wait! If you carry this to the logical conclusion then we are to have only one wife and only of the kind of wife who is taken from our side! If you argue those women who descended from Eve are available to you then you must also argue that they would have been available to Adam since marrying your daughter was not forbidden till after the Lord delivered the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai. Those descendendents of Eve were indeed intended for you and some could have been intended for Adam as well. It's appropriate that I quote chapter and verse so that you won't get puffed up in your indignation. "For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law." Romans 5:13 Another thing about getting only what Adam got. Turn off your lights, computer, and stop driving. Oh yes, put on animal skins and make sure that they're only animal skins that were given you by the Lord because that's the only type that Adam wore. The fact is, only those things that the Bible calls sin, are sin. The Lord has made certain to spell out for us what is sin. Just don't make the mistake of "Christian" men throughout history who have killed other Christians because those Christians chose to follow the Bible and not culture.
